Driving the big CA highways

I have an insane fear that no matter what I do on the freeways, some idiot driver will slam into me and destroy everything.

This must be a common occurance to almost anyone who has ever driven a car – you cruise down the freeway with a reasonable (ie, more than 3 inches) distance between you and the car in front and all of a sudden someone decides that those few feet are theirs and noone elses. You straight away get cut off just because this idiot is 16 seconds behind his schedule and may not get the exact mocha soy latte cappucino that they want at the right temperature.

For me, this fear seems heightened. I didn’t grow up driving anything, and didn’t even start driving until I was 30 years old. Immediately I’m missing out on almost 15 years of experience compared with other people in my own age range, and these are the busiest roads I’ve ever had to lay my eyes on.  Face it, in Australia even in peak hour? The traffic is less than regular times on the great 101 in California. The freeway near home was a massive double-lane road in two directions – 4 lanes total. At places it may reach a total of 6 lanes. During peak hours, the roads would only be busy from say 730am to maybe 855am (from outer-city into the city, a drive of perhaps 30 minutes on a slow day and 20 on a fast day).

In my massive 6 months of experience in driving, I guess I’ve nearly been totalled 5 times. Maybe a lot, maybe it’s really low for this area. I don’t know. I just have the feeling that sometime, somewhere, I’m not going to notice that idiot who thinks he can squeeze his huge 4 wheel drive into a space smaller than a compact.
